1 Dec 2024 – 31 Jan 2025

State-wide reading program for kids: Join. Borrow. Read. Win!

Dive into reading this summer with the Big Summer Read!

See how many books you can read between 1 December and 31 January and discover a world of adventure! We’ve also got challenges with great prizes.

Simply register online or at your local library branch. Track your reading online or in a journal. Complete challenges and go into the draw to win!

Our branches will have an ice-cream themed treasure hunt, challenging kids to find clues in the library to go in the draw for great prizes. Drop into your local library during the challenge to take part, and to discover the other FREE holiday resources on offer for kids and families.

Each Branch will have a set of prizes up for grabs for the Big Summer Read, including vouchers to Timboon Fine Ice Cream, book vouchers to Collins Warrnambool, and an Ash Barty book set.

The Big Summer Read encourages children to read for pleasure and addresses the issue of the “summer slide”.

This refers to the loss of literacy experienced over the long summer break if children are not exposed to books or reading.

The event raises awareness of the benefits of reading over summer and will ensure all Victorians have access to resources that have been proven to slow the slide.

The Big Summer Read is a fun and dynamic campaign supported by readbooks.com.au, a user-friendly reading challenge website, that makes it easy to register, track reading and earn digital ‘badges’ as rewards for reaching reading milestones.

Library members participating in the Big Summer Read must be under the age of 18, reside in Victoria and must be able to collect their prize from a Corangamite Moyne Library Service branch.

How to participate -

  • Register at readbooks.com.au
  • Select Corangamite Moyne Library Service as your library to join the fun
  • Participate by reading and logging either 10 books OR 10 x 30 minutes of reading between 1 Dec 2024 – 31 Jan 2025

*A paper Reading Journal can be collected from your local library branch, but please note that only participants registered through Read Books will be eligible for the statewide prize draw.

Bring on a summer filled with stories!

Statewide prizes -

Readers can enter the statewide prize draw by registering for the Big Summer Read on Read Books and reading and recording 10 books between December 1st 2024 and January 31st 2025. At the conclusion of the program, prize winners will be drawn from 4 categories based on age:

0-4 years
5-8 years
9-12 years
13-18 years

Winners will be notified by their local library service.

Who can participate?

All children between the ages of 0-18 are welcome to participate! Independent and non-independent readers can log any book they read, that is read to them, or listened to as an audio.

We encourage parents and caregivers to continue to read aloud to young people during the summer school holidays and log these books as part of the challenge.

Children under the age of 13 will need a parent’s permission to register with the Read Books website.

Do I have to use the Read Books website?

No! You can pick up a paper Reading Journal at your local library branch from November 6, or download and print a copy from the My Community Library website!

Your paper Reading Journal must be submitted at your local library branch before 31 January 2025.

Please note that only participants registered through Read Books will be eligible for the statewide prize draw. All entries will be eligible for the local prize draw.
